American Crew was founded in 1994 with a single idea: give men the same quality of professional grooming products women already had in salons. Before it existed, men's grooming was a neglected corner of professional beauty. The brand changed that permanently and is now distributed through salons and barbershops in more than 60 countries.
This guide covers what the brand is good at, how its product families divide up, which sizes are worth buying, and — the part most guides leave out — what we do not stock and what to do about it. Everything named here is live in the American Crew collection at ProHair.ca.
What the brand is genuinely good at
American Crew is built around short to mid-length men's cuts styled quickly and expected to hold through a working day. That focus shows up in three places:
- Styling range depth. There are stylers at light, medium and strong hold across matte, natural and glossy finishes, which means you can match a haircut precisely instead of compromising. The hold-and-shine chart covers this in full.
- Shave systems. A genuine pre-shave / shave / post-shave sequence rather than one can of foam.
- Beard and skin. Products built for facial hair and the skin under it, which is not the same skin as your scalp.
Where it is not the right brand: defined-curl routines on longer curly hair, dedicated bond repair, or colour-treated-hair care. The range we carry has no curl cream, no leave-in and no bond builder. If that is what you need, another brand will serve you better and we would rather tell you than sell you the wrong thing.
The families we carry, and what each is for
Pomades — hold with shine
Pomade is the classic: firm, glossy, water-based, made for side parts and slick backs. Heavy Hold Pomade is the firmest and glossiest, for thick coarse hair that shrugs off ordinary pomade by lunchtime. Cream Pomade is the softer half of the family — it stays pliable all day so you can rework a part in the afternoon. Fiber sits in the pomade family by name but behaves like a matte paste: dense, tacky, high-grip, almost no shine.
Clays and pastes — texture without shine
Matte Clay is the workhorse: enough grip for a textured crop, a genuinely flat finish, and a clay base that absorbs surface oil so it reads cleaner on fine or slightly greasy hair. Molding Clay is drier and grittier. Defining Paste is softer and more pliable, built for separation rather than sheen, and it reworks through the day.
Creams — the forgiving middle
Forming Cream is the most forgiving styler in the range and the honest first purchase. Fiber Cream is Fiber's grip in a base that actually spreads, for longer or finer hair. Grooming Cream gives light hold with genuine shine for smoothing longer hair. Whip is the lightest thing American Crew makes — a whipped cream that adds volume without the weight that flattens fine hair.
Gels and sprays — comb-and-set control
Firm Hold Styling Gel is the traditional strong gel: damp hair, comb the shape, it stays, it does not flake, and it re-activates with water. Medium Hold Spray Gel gives gel control without the tube. Alternator Finishing Spray does double duty — sprayed close it adds grit and separation, sprayed from further back it sets the style with a light flexible hold. Boost Powder is the outlier: tap it onto dry roots for instant matte lift.
Cleansing — three genuinely different bottles
Daily Moisturizing Shampoo is the everyday one, built to be used daily without leaving hair stripped. 3-in-1 and 3-in-1 Tea Tree do shampoo, conditioner and body wash in a single bottle — the tea tree version with a cooler scent and a scalp tingle. Detox Shampoo is the weekly reset for clay, pomade and hard-water build-up, and it is deliberately not a daily product.
Shaving — a sequence, not a product
Ultra Gliding Shave Oil goes on first: a few drops into wet skin soften coarse hair and lay down a slip layer, and drag is the single biggest cause of razor burn and ingrown hairs on the neck. Precision Shave Gel goes on translucent so you can see exactly where the blade is going — the barber's pick for edging a beard or cleaning a neckline. Revitalizing Toner afterwards lifts the residue and cools the skin without the sting of a high-alcohol splash.
Beard and skin
Beard Foam Cleanser washes facial hair without the stripping that regular shampoo and bar soap cause. Beard Serum conditions coarse hair and the skin under it without a greasy sheen. Beard Balm adds the light hold an oil cannot, so a full beard stops splaying. 2-in-1 Skin Moisturizer & Beard Conditioner hydrates the face and beard in one step — and since most beard problems are skin problems, it is the one to start with.

The 1 L bottles are the only genuine per-millilitre saving in the range. The small sizes are not there to be economical — they are there so you can find out what you like before buying the big one.
What we do not stock
American Crew's global catalogue is considerably larger than the range distributed and stocked in Canada, and we would rather be straight about the gap than let you hunt for something that is not there. As of today we do not carry:
- A separate conditioner. On short hair the conditioning film the 3-in-1 leaves is usually enough. On longer hair it may not be.
- A full-lather shaving cream. We stock the precision gel, which is a different product for a different job.
- The men's colour system. ProHair does not currently retail American Crew colour.
- Several sizes that exist in the brand's wider catalogue but not on our shelf.
