The three permanent lines, and how to tell them apart
This is the question that comes up most. Joico sells three permanent creme colours, and they are aimed at three different clients.
Vero K-PAK Permanent — the everyday professional line
Vero K-PAK Permanent Hair Color is the workhorse: 46 shades in stock, rich fade-resistant deposit, strong grey coverage, and — the differentiator — K-PAK bond protection built into the colour itself, so hair comes out of the service in better condition than a standard permanent leaves it. Tonal range is the widest of the three, which is why it is the default for creative and corrective work.
Reach for it when: you want maximum shade choice, dimensional tone, or you are colouring hair that is already compromised.
Age Defy — permanent colour engineered for mature hair
Age Defy Permanent Hair Color is Vero K-PAK reworked for ageing hair: 36 shades, full grey coverage, and YouthLock technology to leave fragile strands feeling stronger and looking healthier rather than more porous. Grey hair is coarser, more resistant and less elastic, and Age Defy is formulated around that, not around a general-purpose head of hair.
Reach for it when: grey coverage is the brief and the hair is fragile with it.
YouthLock Permanent Creme Color — the collagen line
YouthLock Permanent Creme Color is the newer 74 ml collagen-infused permanent, 26 shades. It shares its technology with the YouthLock take-home care range, so the salon service and the retail recommendation line up — useful when you want the client leaving with something that continues the work.
Reach for it when: you want the colour service and the retail shelf on the same chemistry for a mature-hair client.
Semi-permanent and demi: Color Intensity, Demi Gloss, Quick Tone, K-PAK Chrome
Color Intensity — vivids, no developer
Color Intensity is a direct dye. There is no developer, no mixing ratio and no oxidation — pigment deposits straight onto the strand from a conditioning base. Two consequences matter in practice. First, it does not lift, so the result is entirely a function of how light the hair already is; the pastels and neons need proper pre-lightening to read true. Second, it fades gradually and evenly rather than growing out with a demarcation line, which makes it forgiving for clients who change their mind. 31 shades in stock.
Blonde Life Demi Gloss — liquid toning
Blonde Life Demi Gloss is a 60 ml demi-permanent liquid toner, 13 shades. Liquid consistency makes it fast and even at the bowl, which is what you want for a toner going onto freshly lightened hair that has no patience left in it.
Blonde Life Quick Tone — creme toning
Quick Tone Liqui-Creme Toner is the 74 ml creme-consistency toner, 4 shades. Creme holds where you place it, so this is the one for targeted correction — a hot root, a band, a section that pulled warm — rather than an all-over tone.
K-PAK Chrome — demi-permanent creme
K-PAK Chrome Demi-Permanent Creme Color is the 60 ml demi line, 2 shades in stock, mixed with the Vero K-PAK Chrome Activator. Demi work for gloss, refresh and grey blending where you want no lift at all.
Hyper High Lift and Base Breaker
Blonde Life Hyper High Lift Creme Color (2 shades) is the high-lift permanent for taking natural levels up in one step. Vero K-PAK Base Breaker Cool softens a natural base by a level or two without committing to a full permanent — the quiet workhorse of root-shadow and lived-in colour.
Which developer goes with what
Getting this wrong is the single most common cause of a colour that will not do what the swatch promised. The pairings:
- Vero K-PAK Permanent and Age Defy → Veroxide Cream Developer. We stock 20 Volume (6%) in four sizes.
- Demi and deposit-only work → VeroGlaze No-Lift Creme Developer, which activates without lifting at all.
- K-PAK Chrome Demi → Vero K-PAK Chrome Activator, 946 ml.
- Blonde Life lightening → Blonde Life Coconut Oil Developer, stocked in 5 Vol, 20 Vol and 40 Vol.
- Color Intensity → none. It is a direct dye.
Mixing ratios are printed on the tube and they are not consistent across lines. Read the tube, not your memory of the last line you used.
Lighteners: five, and they are not interchangeable
Joico's lightening bench splits by technique, not by strength.
- VeroLight Lightening Powder — the general-purpose on/off-scalp powder, stocked in two sizes.
- Blonde Life Lightening Powder (454 g) — the Blonde Life system's own powder, for when you are staying inside that family through to the toner.
- Blonde Life Silverlight Lightening Powder — the cool-toned option, for lifting without pulling warm.
- Blonde Life Creme Lightener (300 g, on/off scalp) — creme consistency for scalp comfort and controlled placement.
- Blonde Life Balayage Lightener (227 g) — thick enough to stay exactly where you paint it, which is the whole requirement for freehand work.
Rule of thumb: powder for foils and off-scalp, creme for on-scalp, balayage clay for freehand. Then pick Silverlight over the standard powder when the client's history says the hair will pull warm.
Protecting the hair through the service
Vero K-PAK carries bond protection in the colour itself, but lightening is where hair is genuinely at risk. The two salon steps are Defy Damage ProSeries 1 Bond Protector Spray, applied as a colour optimizer before the service, and ProSeries 2 Bond Treatment after. For take-home, the KBOND20 Power Masque is the weekly step — measured at 5X stronger hair — and In a Flash is the fast one for a client who will not commit to a treatment night.
