The SexyHair Hairspray Guide: Hold, Finish and When to Use Each One

SexyHair sells seven hairsprays across three ranges, and the range badge is the least useful thing on the can. Buy on hold and finish instead. This guide puts all seven in order and tells you which one belongs at the end of which style.

The hold ladder, softest to hardest

  1. So Touchable — weightless (HEALTHY, 256 g, $27.00). The one for people who dislike the feeling of hairspray. Flexible enough that hair still moves; not the one for a style that has to survive a windy platform.
  2. Spray & Play — volumizing, brushable (BIG, 284 g $27.00 / 455 g $33.00 / 43 ml mini $10.75). The brand's workhorse. Brushable means you can spray, then keep working the hair, which is why it is the one stylists reach for mid-blow-dry rather than only at the end.
  3. High Tide — texturizing finish (TEXTURE, 228 g, $27.00). Sits sideways on the ladder: it adds grit as well as hold. If you want the finished style to look undone rather than set, this replaces a conventional finishing spray.
  4. Weather Proof — humidity control (BIG, 142 g, $26.50). Also sideways: its job is frizz and humidity resistance, not structural hold. On a humid day it goes on after your hold spray, not instead of it.
  5. Spray & Play Harder — firm (BIG, 284 g $27.00 / 50 ml mini $10.75). Same volumizing brief as Spray & Play, one step up in hold.
  6. What A Tease — firm, backcomb in a bottle (BIG, 119 g, $26.50). Designed to give the grip and height of backcombing without the comb. Use it at the root, in sections, before you shape.
  7. Spray & Stay — intense (BIG, 300 ml $27.00 / 50 ml mini $10.75). The finisher for a style that must not move. Its non-aerosol twin is Spritz & Stay (250 ml, $27.00), which dries fast and is the one to buy if you cannot travel with an aerosol.

Aerosol or pump?

Only one pair in the range gives you the choice: Spray & Stay (aerosol) and Spritz & Stay (non-aerosol pump), both intense hold, both $27.00. A pump gives you a wetter, more targeted spray — better for setting a specific section, worse for an even all-over mist. Aerosol dries faster and distributes more evenly.

Which spray finishes which style

  • Blow-out with volume → Spray & Play while you dry, Spray & Play Harder at the end if it drops.
  • Updo or set → What A Tease at the root, Spray & Stay over the top.
  • Undone, lived-in → High Tide, and nothing else.
  • Humid day, any style → your normal spray, then Weather Proof over it.
  • Fine hair that hairspray usually flattens → So Touchable.

The value note

Spray & Play is the only hairspray with a second full size: 455 g for $33.00 works out at 7.3 cents per gram against 9.5 cents on the 284 g can — about 24 per cent cheaper per gram. Four sprays have a $10.75 travel mini (Spray & Play, Spray & Play Harder, Spray & Stay and Volume Flex), which is the right way to find out whether you like a hold before you buy 284 g of it.
