The SexyHair Texture Guide: Pastes, Waxes, Clay and Beachy Grit

Texture is the other half of what SexyHair does well, and it is spread across two ranges that want different things. TEXTURE is beachy, salt-and-grit, undone. The STYLE pastes, waxes and clays are short-hair tools for separation and matte control. Buying from the wrong one is the usual mistake.

TEXTURE — four products, all undone

  • Foam Party (146 g, $26.50) — a lite texturizing foam for damp hair. The only one of the four you apply before drying, so it is the one that shapes the whole style rather than finishing it.
  • Beach'n Spray (125 ml, $26.50) — beachy texture without the sand-in-the-hair feel that cheap salt sprays leave.
  • Surfer Girl (193 g, $27.00) — a dry texturizing spray for grit on already-dry hair. The closest thing to an everyday texture spray in the range.
  • High Tide (228 g, $27.00) — a texturizing hairspray. Texture and hold in one can, which makes it a finishing product rather than a building one.

Sequence, if you want all of it: Foam Party on damp hair, dry, Surfer Girl or Beach'n Spray for grit, High Tide to finish. Most people need two of the four, not four.

STYLE — pastes, waxes, clay and pomade

These are hand products for short and mid-length hair, all 70 g and all $25.50 unless noted.

  • Frenzy — matte texturizing paste. The default for separation with no shine.
  • Control Maniac — high-hold styling wax. More grip than Frenzy, slightly less matte.
  • Rough & Ready Gunk — texturizing pomade. Pomade means more pliability and more shine than a wax.
  • HEALTHY Styling Paste — the mimosa-flower texture paste from the HEALTHY range, if you want the same effect from a care-led formula.
  • Spray Clay (125 g, $26.50) — clay you spray instead of working through with your hands. Better for long hair, where a hand product would clump.
  • Play Dirty (136 g, $26.50) — dry wax spray. Same logic as Spray Clay, waxier finish.
  • Slept In Texture Creme (150 ml, $26.50) — a creme rather than a paste, for the softer, second-day, slept-in look on longer hair.

Hands or spray?

Below roughly chin length, use a hand product — Frenzy, Control Maniac, Rough & Ready Gunk. Longer than that, a hand product tends to clump at the point where you first touched the hair, and a spray form (Spray Clay, Play Dirty, Surfer Girl) distributes far better.

Matte or not

Frenzy, Spray Clay and Play Dirty finish matte. Rough & Ready Gunk and Control Maniac carry more shine. The TEXTURE sprays sit in between — they add grit without deliberately killing shine, which is why they suit mid-length hair where a fully matte finish reads as dry.
