Biolage 400 ml vs 1 L vs 3.8 L: The Salon Back-Bar Cost Guide

Biolage sells the same formula in up to four package sizes, and the price per millilitre between them is not close. This guide does the arithmetic so you can decide properly — whether you are stocking a back bar or just wondering if the litre is worth it.

Prices and sizes below were correct on ProHair.ca in September 2026. Ranges change and packages are discontinued — always confirm the exact size and price on the product page before you buy.

The headline numbers

Take the most common Biolage shampoo pricing, which applies to HydraSource, ColorLast, SmoothProof and the Detangling Solution:

Size Price Cost per 100 ml vs 400 ml
400 ml $23.80 $5.95
1 L $39.90 $3.99 33% less
3.8 L $65.92 $1.73 71% less

That is the whole argument. A 3.8 L jug at $65.92 costs less than three 400 ml bottles and holds nine and a half of them. For a salon washing ten to fifteen heads a day, the difference between the 400 ml and the 3.8 L on a single shampoo is a four-figure sum over a year.

Which Biolage lines go all the way to 3.8 L

Not every line does. As of September 2026 the 3.8 L back-bar size is stocked on:

Everything else tops out at 1 litre: Ultra HydraSource, SmoothProof, Volume Boost, Full Rescue and all four ScalpSync shampoos. If your back bar is built around one of those, the litre is your economy size and it still saves a third against the 400 ml.

The litre tier, line by line

Almost every Biolage litre is $39.90 — $3.99 per 100 ml. Two exceptions worth knowing: Volume Boost Shampoo is $42.75 at 1 L ($4.28 per 100 ml), and the smaller conditioner formats price differently because the retail size is 236 ml rather than 400 ml. On a 236 ml conditioner at $23.80 you are paying $10.08 per 100 ml, so moving those to the litre is the single biggest saving in the range — a 60% drop.

That applies to HydraSource Conditioning Balm, ScalpSync Conditioner, Full Rescue Conditioner and Strength Recovery Conditioning Cream. If you buy one thing in litre format, make it the conditioner.

What the matched duos actually save

Biolage duos pair a shampoo with its matching conditioner in one purchase:

At the 400 ml tier a duo saves a little against $47.60 for the two bottles bought separately. At the litre tier the duo is $77.81 against $79.80 — again a small saving. The duo is a convenience and a small discount, not the big lever. The big lever is the size tier: moving one shampoo from 400 ml to 3.8 L saves far more than every duo in the range put together.

The honest case against a litre at home

Three reasons to stay on the 400 ml.

You will not finish it. A litre of shampoo is two and a half retail bottles. At three washes a week it is roughly a year's supply. Shampoo is stable but it is not improved by sitting open for twelve months, and the fragrance is usually the first thing to go.

Litres need a pump and a decant. Pouring from a 1 L bottle in a shower is how people waste product. Budget for a pump, and be aware that decanting into an unlabelled bottle loses you the batch information and the ingredient list.

You may not stay on the line. If you are trying Biolage for the first time, a litre is a large bet on a formula you have used twice. Buy the 400 ml, run it for a month, then size up on the one you know works.

For salon owners: a simple stocking rule

Buy the 3.8 L on the one or two shampoos that go on nearly every head — usually HydraSource and ColorLast. Buy litres on the conditioners, where the saving per 100 ml is largest. Keep the specialist lines — ScalpSync, Volume Boost, Full Rescue — at 400 ml until the demand is proven, and stock the retail shelf in the same 400 ml size so a client can buy the exact product they were washed with. That last point sells more retail than any display.

Buying Biolage at ProHair

ProHair is a Canadian professional distributor and has been supplying salons since 1996. Biolage arrives through the authorised Canadian professional channel, which matters more than it sounds: a shampoo that has spent two years in a warehouse or been decanted into an unbranded bottle does not perform like a fresh one. Shipping is free over $99.99, and the back-bar sizes are stocked alongside the retail ones so a salon and its clients can buy the same formula.
