The Matrix Repair Guide: Instacure Anti-Breakage vs Build-A-Bond vs Unbreak My Blonde

"Damaged hair" is the vaguest phrase in haircare, and it is why so many repair products disappoint. Hair fails in three different ways, and each one needs a different intervention. Matrix has three ranges aimed at damage — Instacure Anti-Breakage, Instacure Build-A-Bond and Unbreak My Blonde — and choosing between them by name alone is a coin flip.

This guide explains what is actually broken in each case, which range fixes it, and how to build a routine that repairs without swinging too far the other way.

Three kinds of damage

1. Structural bond damage. Inside every hair are disulphide bonds holding the keratin together. Bleach, permanent colour, perms and relaxers break them. Broken bonds mean the fibre loses tensile strength, stretches when wet and snaps. This is chemical damage, and only a bond-building product addresses it. → Build-A-Bond or Unbreak My Blonde.

2. Protein loss and porosity. The cuticle lifts and stays lifted. Hair becomes rough, drinks product without improving, tangles constantly and feels weak. This is mechanical and cumulative — heat, friction, brushing, sun. → Anti-Breakage.

3. Dryness. Not damage at all. The hair lacks water and lipids but its structure is intact. It feels dry, dull and rough, but it does not snap. → not a repair range at all — see Food For Soft below.

The diagnostic that separates them takes ten seconds. Take a wet strand and pull it gently. If it stretches a long way and does not spring back, or snaps, you have bond damage. If it feels rough and dry but returns to shape, you have dryness. If it snaps easily when dry with little stretch, you have protein loss.

Instacure Anti-Breakage — for fragile, snapping hair

Anti-Breakage is the liquid-protein half of Instacure. It works by depositing small proteins that fill porosity gaps in the cuticle and reinforce the fibre so it stops snapping under ordinary handling. Matrix rates the range at up to 60% less breakage.

The core pair is the Instacure Anti-Breakage Shampoo and Anti-Breakage Conditioner, both in 300 ml and 1 L. Two leave-ins do the real work:

  • Anti-Breakage Porosity Spray — a 200 ml pre-treatment that evens out porosity before you condition or colour. On very uneven hair this is the product that makes everything else behave.
  • Anti-Breakage Leave-In Cream — 150 ml, heat protective to 230 C. If you use hot tools on fragile hair, this is not optional.

Best for: hair that snaps, short broken pieces at the crown, high porosity, heavy heat use.

Instacure Build-A-Bond — for chemically broken bonds

Build-A-Bond is the bond-rebuilding half, and it is the one to reach for after a colour or lightening service rather than instead of one. It targets the disulphide bonds directly.

The range is deep. Mighty Bonds Shampoo and Mighty Care Conditioner are the wash pair, in 300 ml and 1 L, and are also sold together as the Build-A-Bond Duo. Then:

  • Instant Revival Liquid Mask — 280 ml, 60-second processing. The single most useful product in the range, because a treatment people actually have time for is a treatment people actually use.
  • Billion Bond Oil — 50 ml finishing serum for strength and shine on dry hair.
  • Super Sealing Leave-In Balm — 100 ml, heat protective, seals the cuticle after treatment.

Best for: post-colour, post-lightening, post-perm or relaxer, over-processed hair.

Unbreak My Blonde — bond repair aimed at bleached hair

Unbreak My Blonde overlaps with Build-A-Bond but is not redundant. Two things set it apart. First, it is sulfate-free, which matters enormously on bleached hair where the cuticle is permanently more open and sulfate cleansing keeps stripping. Second, it uses citric acid as its repair mechanism, working on the acidic side to smooth and strengthen the fibre rather than depositing protein.

The Unbreak My Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner come in 300 ml and 1 L, and the Reviving Leave-In Treatment is a 150 ml leave-in for daily use.

Best for: bleached, platinum and heavily highlighted hair; anyone who needs sulfate-free and bond repair in the same bottle.

Choosing between the three

  • Hair snaps, no recent chemical service → Anti-Breakage.
  • Hair is gummy or stretchy when wet after colour → Build-A-Bond.
  • Bleached blonde, needs sulfate-free → Unbreak My Blonde.
  • Bleached blonde, sulfates not a concern, wants the deepest range → Build-A-Bond.
  • Rough and dry but not breaking → none of them. Use Food For Soft.

The protein-overload trap

All three of these ranges are protein or bond focused, and it is genuinely possible to overdo it. Hair that has had too much protein and not enough moisture goes stiff, straw-like and brittle — which feels like more damage, so people apply more repair, and it gets worse.

The fix is balance. Run your repair range as the base and alternate a moisture treatment in weekly: the Food For Soft Rich Hydrating Treatment Mask is the natural partner, and the 75 ml size is enough to test whether moisture is what your hair was missing. If your hair felt better after a moisturising mask and worse after a protein one, believe it.

A worked routine — post-bleach recovery

  1. Wash: Unbreak My Blonde Shampoo, or Mighty Bonds if sulfate-free is not a requirement.
  2. Condition: the matching conditioner, every wash.
  3. Weekly repair: Instant Revival Liquid Mask, 60 seconds.
  4. Alternate week: Food For Soft Rich Mask instead, to keep protein and moisture balanced.
  5. Tone: So Silver once or twice a week in place of your usual shampoo.
  6. Every heat session: Super Sealing Leave-In Balm or the Anti-Breakage Leave-In Cream before the iron.
  7. Finish: Billion Bond Oil on dry ends.

Where Matrix is not the answer

These ranges are strong maintenance and good recovery. They are not miracle rescue. Hair that has been lifted repeatedly, is gummy when wet and disintegrating when combed is past what any retail range can rebuild — that needs an in-salon bond treatment and, usually, a cut. Any brand claiming otherwise is selling you time you do not have.

The bottom line

Diagnose first: snapping means protein, stretching means bonds, rough-but-intact means moisture. Anti-Breakage for the first, Build-A-Bond or Unbreak My Blonde for the second, Food For Soft for the third. Balance protein with moisture and the routine holds.
