Curly hair is not one category. A loose wave and a tight coil have different porosity, different moisture needs and, critically, different tolerance for product weight — and most brands sell them the same bottle. Matrix does not. A Curl Can Dream is deliberately split into two weights, and there is a permanent colour and a lightening system built for textured hair specifically.

Find your weight class first
Forget the numbered typing systems for a moment. The practical question is how much product weight your hair can carry before the pattern collapses.
- Waves and loose curls — the pattern is an S rather than a spiral. It is easily flattened. Rich creams and heavy oils kill it. → the Wave products.
- Defined curls and coils — spirals or tight zig-zags. The strand is structurally more porous at every bend, so it loses moisture constantly and can absorb a great deal of product. → the rich products.
If you are between the two, start with the Wave products and add richness. Going the other way — starting heavy and trying to wash weight out — takes far longer to diagnose.
The Wave products — for waves and loose curls
A Curl Can Dream Wave Weightless Shampoo and Wave Weightless Conditioner are built to clean and soften without leaving residue that drags the wave flat. Both come in 300 ml and 1 L, and the Wave Duo pairs them at a lower price than the singles.
The styler that belongs with them is Scrunch N' Go Wave Defining Spray — a 250 ml soft-hold spray you scrunch into damp hair. Wavy hair needs encouragement rather than control, and a spray delivers far less weight than a cream or gel. This one product is often the whole difference between limp and defined.
The rich products — for curls and coils
A Curl Can Dream Shampoo is the manuka honey cleanse for curls and coils, in 300 ml and 1 L. Its partner is the A Curl Can Dream Rich Mask, and this is the most important product in the range for tight textures: it is stocked in 280 ml, 500 ml and 1 L, which tells you how much of it coily-haired people actually get through.
Used as a rinse-out it is a weekly deep treatment. Used as a leave-in on soaking wet hair it doubles as a curl cream. On coils, most people find they need it at every wash rather than weekly — coily hair simply loses moisture faster.
The stylers
- A Curl Can Dream Light Hold Gel — 200 ml, definition without crunch or flaking. Apply to soaking wet hair, not damp, and do not touch it until it is completely dry. The cast that forms is meant to be scrunched out at the end.
- A Curl Can Dream Lightweight Oil — 131 ml for hair and scalp. Light enough for waves as a finishing oil, and genuinely useful on a dry coily scalp.
For extra hold on tight coils, Controller Strong Hold Gel is the stronger option when the light-hold gel is not enough to hold a set.
Two worked routines
Wavy hair, wash day: Wave Weightless Shampoo → Wave Weightless Conditioner, rinse most of it out → flip head, scrunch in Scrunch N' Go on soaking hair → air dry or diffuse on low, do not touch while drying.
Coily hair, wash day: A Curl Can Dream Shampoo → Rich Mask, ten minutes, detangle with fingers while it is in → rinse partially → Light Hold Gel raked through soaking wet hair in sections → a few drops of Lightweight Oil on the scalp → diffuse or air dry → scrunch out the cast once bone dry.
Colouring textured hair
Standard permanent colour applied to coily hair grabs unevenly, because porosity varies dramatically along a coiled strand — high at every bend, lower on the straight sections. The result is a patchy, banded finish that no amount of skill at the bowl fully corrects.
Coil Color is Matrix's permanent formulated for that structure, and it has its own Coil Color Oil-Cream Developer in 20 and 30 volume. The developer is oil-based rather than a standard cream, and it is not interchangeable with the general Matrix Cream Developer — use the matched pair.
Lightening without losing the pattern
This is the section worth reading twice. Curl pattern is held by the same disulphide bonds that lightening breaks. It is entirely possible to lighten curly hair to a beautiful colour and discover weeks later that the curl has slackened permanently — the client sees a colour result they like on wash day one and a limp, undefined pattern by week three.
Curl Lights is the two-step system built to avoid that: a 60 g Step 1 Lightening Cream followed by the 180 g Step 2 Lightening Powder. Both steps are required; it is a system, not a choice between two products. Full context in the lighteners and developers guide.

Scalp care under protective styles
Braids, twists and tight styles put sustained tension on the follicle, and the discomfort is not something to push through. Common mistakes
- Applying product to damp hair. Curl products need soaking wet hair to distribute and clump properly. Damp is too late.
- Touching it while it dries. Every touch breaks the clump. Hands off until bone dry, then scrunch.
- Buying the rich products for wavy hair. The single most common mismatch in this range.
- Skipping the cast. The crunchy shell from gel is doing its job; scrunching it out at the end is the last step, not a failure.
The bottom line
Waves take the Wave products and a light spray. Curls and coils take the rich shampoo, the Rich Mask in the biggest size you can justify, and the Light Hold Gel on soaking wet hair. Colour with Coil Color and its matched developer; lighten with Curl Lights and follow with bond care.
