Four Pureology shampoos sit at almost the same price and make almost the same promise: moisture, without wrecking your colour. Hydrate is $37.50 for 266 ml. Hydrate Sheer is $37.50. Pure Volume is $37.50. Nanoworks Gold is $41.25. They are not interchangeable, and the difference is not subtlety — pick the wrong one and your hair is either flat or still dry.
The deciding factor is not how dry your hair is. It is how heavy your hair can go before it stops looking like hair. Here is how to read that.
The one question that sorts all four
Put your hand under a handful of your dry hair and lift it. Then answer honestly:
- It has real weight and body, and it still feels rough or thirsty. → Hydrate.
- It is fine, and it goes limp within hours of any conditioner. → Hydrate Sheer.
- It is fine and it never has lift at the root, dry or not. → Pure Volume.
- It has been coloured for years, feels rough, looks dull, and snaps. → Nanoworks Gold.

Hydrate — $37.50 / 266 ml
The founding Pureology shampoo, and the correct default for most colour clients.
What is in it: jojoba, green tea, sage, aloe and soy protein, over ZeroSulfate® cleansing and the patented AntiFade Complex®. Lightweight silicones give slip. Lavender, bergamot and patchouli.
Who it is for: normal to thick, dry, colour-treated hair. It is a creamy, rich lather, and hair with body can carry it.
How you know it is wrong for you: your roots are flat by the afternoon. That is the silicone doing its job on hair too fine to carry it — move to Sheer.

Hydrate Sheer — $37.50 / 266 ml
The same moisture brief, rebuilt silicone-free for hair that cannot carry weight.
What is in it: jojoba, green tea and sage again, with no silicone film. Same lavender, bergamot and patchouli aromatherapy as Hydrate.
Who it is for: fine, dry, colour-treated hair. It hydrates and detangles and then rinses clean, which is the entire point.
How you know it is wrong for you: your hair is thick and it still feels dry after two weeks. Sheer is not richer than Hydrate, it is lighter — go back to Hydrate.
Sizes and prices are identical to Hydrate.
Pure Volume — $37.50 / 266 ml
Also silicone-free, but this one is not a moisture line at all. It is a volume line.
What is in it: wheat protein and eucalyptus leaf extract — protein to build body into the strand rather than oils to soften it. Pink grapefruit, wild rose and cedarwood.
Who it is for: fine, flat, colour-treated hair whose complaint is lift, not dryness.
Sheer or Pure Volume? This is the pair people get wrong most often. Sheer solves dry. Pure Volume solves flat. If your fine hair is dry and flat, start on Sheer and add a Style + Protect root product — a shampoo cannot do both jobs properly at once.

Nanoworks Gold — $41.25 / 266 ml
The richest and most expensive shampoo Pureology makes, and a different problem entirely.
What is in it: Keravis plant protein, astaxanthin and golden marula oil.
Who it is for: hair that has been coloured repeatedly over years and has gone dull, rough and fragile — the loss of shine and elasticity that no amount of ordinary conditioner brings back.
The honest part: Nanoworks Gold is no longer on Pureology Canada's own collection list. Our supplier still carries it and we still sell it, but it has no announced successor. If you want a line you can re-buy for years, Strength Cure covers the repair brief and stays.

What if the problem is not moisture at all?
Three other Pureology shampoos exist for three other problems, and if one of these describes you, none of the four above is your answer:
- Damage — hair that snaps or feels stretchy when wet. Strength Cure Shampoo, $37.50 / 266 ml. Keravis protein and astaxanthin; the brand claims 2× stronger strands in one use.
- Brass in blonde or highlighted hair. Strength Cure Blonde Purple Shampoo, $37.50 / 266 ml. Violet pigment on top of the same repair system.
- Frizz that shows up as the hair dries. Smooth Gloss Anti-Frizz Shampoo, $37.50 / 266 ml. Biotin and an amino-acid complex; up to 72 hours of frizz control at 90% humidity.
Test before you commit
Every one of these lines is sold in a 50 ml travel size at $13.50 (Smooth Gloss is $11.25). That is three weeks of washes for a third of the price of a mistake, and it is the sensible way to settle a Hydrate-versus-Sheer argument you cannot settle by reading.
