Pureology makes nine lines that we stock, and at a glance several of them look like the same thing. Hydrate and Hydrate Sheer are both moisture. Pure Volume and Hydrate Sheer are both light. Smooth Gloss and Smooth Perfection are both frizz. Strength Cure and Strength Cure Blonde are both repair. Picking wrong costs $37.50 and six weeks of washes.
This guide takes each line, says plainly who it is for, what is actually in it, and — where two lines look interchangeable — which one you want. It also tells you which two lines the brand is quietly retiring, because that matters if you are choosing something to stay on.
The Pureology difference
Two technologies run through every product, and they are the reason the brand costs what it does.
ZeroSulfate® cleansing. No sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate. Sulfates are efficient detergents and they take colour pigment out along with oil and dirt. Pureology's surfactant system cleans without that trade, which is why hair does not feel squeaky and stripped afterwards.
AntiFade Complex®. A patented antioxidant and UV-filter blend — sunflower seed and vitamin E — that shields the shade from sun, heat and pollution. It is in every Pureology product, including the stylers and the hair perfume, not just the shampoos.
Everything is 100% vegan, and Pureology has been PETA-certified cruelty-free since 2012. The brand was founded in Irvine, California in 1999 by stylist Jim Markham, launched commercially in 2001, and was bought by L'Oréal in 2007.
One correction, because it is repeated all over the internet: Pureology contains no keratin. The protein in Strength Cure, Strength Cure Blonde and Nanoworks Gold is Keravis, and it is plant-derived.
Who Pureology is for
If you pay a salon for your colour, this brand is aimed squarely at you. The entire technology stack exists to make the shade last between appointments. If you do not colour your hair, you can absolutely use Pureology and it will feel lovely — but you are paying a premium for the one feature you will never notice.
It is also a genuinely good option if you are vegan, if sulfates leave your scalp tight, or if you have fine coloured hair. That last one is unusual: Hydrate Sheer and Pure Volume are both silicone-free, which is exactly why fine hair does not collapse in them.
Who should look elsewhere
If the price is the problem, we would rather say so. A 266 ml Hydrate shampoo is $37.50. The litre is $86.25. The 1 L Hydrate duo is $168.19, and Nanoworks Gold runs to $198.90 for the 1 L duo. On uncoloured hair, a drugstore sulfate-free shampoo does most of this for a fifth of the money.
If you are fragrance-sensitive, this is the wrong brand. Every line is deliberately and heavily scented, and there is no unscented option anywhere in the range — lavender, bergamot and patchouli on Hydrate; pear, rose and sandalwood on Strength Cure Blonde; pink grapefruit, wild rose and cedarwood on Pure Volume; jasmine, sandalwood and amber on Smooth Gloss.
And no colour-care shampoo fixes a bad colour. It slows fade. It will not correct tone, re-pigment, or undo over-processing.
Line by line
Hydrate — the default
For: dry, normal-to-thick, colour-treated hair. Creamy ZeroSulfate lather with jojoba, green tea, sage, aloe and soy protein. Hydrate Sheer — Hydrate for fine hair
For: fine, dry, colour-treated hair. Same hydration target, silicone-free, so nothing films the strand and weighs it down. Jojoba, green tea and sage again. Same prices as Hydrate. Best for: anyone whose hair is flat by lunchtime in a richer conditioner.
Pure Volume — body, not just lightness
For: fine, flat, colour-treated hair. Also silicone-free, but formulated to add body rather than merely avoid weight, using wheat protein and eucalyptus leaf extract. Pink grapefruit, wild rose, cedarwood. Same prices as Hydrate. Best for: fine hair whose problem is lift, not dryness.
Strength Cure — repair
For: damaged, over-processed, breaking colour-treated hair. Keravis plant protein and astaxanthin, with wheat and soy proteins in the shampoo. The brand claims 2× stronger strands in one use. Shampoo and conditioner $13.50 / $37.50 / $86.25; duo $73.13 / $168.19. Strength Cure Blonde — repair that also tones
For: blonde, bleached and highlighted hair going brassy. Everything Strength Cure does, plus Purple Orchid violet pigment. Pear, rose, sandalwood. Best for: lightened hair that needs strength and tone at once.
Smooth Gloss — the new frizz line
For: frizz-prone colour-treated hair. Pureology claims 8× smoother strands, +50% gloss and up to 72 hours of frizz control at 90% humidity. Biotin and an amino-acid complex; jasmine, sandalwood, amber. Anti-Frizz Shampoo $11.25 (50 ml) / $37.50 (266 ml) / $86.25 (1 L); Treatment Mask $11.25 (30 ml) / $45.00 (250 ml); Silkmorphose Smoothing Spray $15.00 (30 ml) / $39.00 (230 ml), whose polymers activate under heat so the blow-dry is what sets the smoothness. Nanoworks Gold — legacy luxury repair
For: hair coloured repeatedly over years that has gone dull, rough and fragile. The richest thing Pureology makes. Keravis protein, astaxanthin and golden marula oil. Smooth Perfection — legacy frizz line
For: coarse, unruly colour-treated hair. Shea butter and camellia. Shampoo $13.50 / $37.50 / $86.25; conditioner $13.50, 50 ml only — we carry the travel size alone, so pair the shampoo with the Smooth Gloss mask if you need a full routine. Best for: people already on it who want to stay on it.
Color Fanatic — the cross-line finisher
For: everyone. The 21-in-1 Leave-In Spray goes on damp or dry hair before styling and detangles, hydrates, smooths, seals and protects to 450 °F. Coconut and olive oils, vitamin E. $13.50 (30 ml) / $37.13 (200 ml) / $52.13 (400 ml). The honest note about two of these lines
Nanoworks Gold and Smooth Perfection are no longer on Pureology Canada's own collection list. Our supplier still carries them, so we still sell them and you can still buy them here. But if you are choosing a line to settle on for the next few years, Smooth Gloss is the brand's active answer to frizz and there is no announced successor to Nanoworks Gold. We would rather tell you that now than have you build a routine on something that disappears.

If you only buy one thing
Color Fanatic 21-in-1 Leave-In Spray, 200 ml, $37.13. It works with every line and every hair type, it is the single product that most improves an otherwise ordinary routine, and the 30 ml at $13.50 is the cheapest honest way to find out whether you like the brand at all.
Buying smart
- The litre is the value size. 266 ml at $37.50 works out to 14.1 ¢/ml; the 1 L at $86.25 is 8.6 ¢/ml — 39% less per millilitre. Add the White Liter Pump, $4.99, because a litre bottle without one is genuinely awkward.
- Duos save about 2.5% against the two bottles bought separately, and they are one line to re-order.
- 50 ml travel sizes are $13.50 (Smooth Gloss shampoo and mask, $11.25). Test the line before you commit $86.25 to a litre.

FAQ
Does Pureology contain keratin? No. The protein in Strength Cure, Strength Cure Blonde and Nanoworks Gold is Keravis, a plant-derived protein. Pureology is 100% vegan, so no keratin — which is an animal protein — appears anywhere in the range.
Why sulfate-free for coloured hair? Sulfates are strong detergents that lift colour pigment out of the fibre along with oil and dirt. ZeroSulfate® cleansing uses gentler surfactants that clean without that trade, so the shade you paid for stays in longer and the hair does not feel stripped.
Hydrate or Hydrate Sheer? Thickness decides it, not dryness. Both are moisture lines. Hydrate is creamier and made for normal to thick hair; Hydrate Sheer is silicone-free and made for fine hair that goes flat in richer formulas. If a conditioner has ever left your roots limp within hours, take Sheer.
Hydrate Sheer or Pure Volume? Sheer is a moisture line that happens to be light. Pure Volume is a volume line — wheat protein and eucalyptus build body rather than just avoiding weight. Fine and dry, take Sheer. Fine and flat, take Pure Volume.
Is Pureology really concentrated? Yes, and it changes the maths. A smaller dose lathers, so a bottle lasts noticeably longer than its size suggests. It is one of the reasons the litre is worth buying: less product per wash, at 8.6 ¢/ml.
Can I use purple shampoo every day? Strength Cure Blonde deposits violet pigment with every wash. On very porous, freshly lightened blonde, daily use can push the tone cool or dull. Alternate it with Hydrate or Hydrate Sheer and use the purple two or three washes a week.
Is Pureology tested on animals? No. Pureology has been PETA-certified cruelty-free since 2012 and every formula is 100% vegan, with no animal-derived ingredients at any point.

Most colour clients should start on Hydrate, or Hydrate Sheer if their hair is fine. Add Color Fanatic 21-in-1 and you have a complete routine. Move to Strength Cure if the hair is damaged, Strength Cure Blonde if it is blonde and brassy, and Smooth Gloss if the fight is with frizz. Buy the litre when you know the line works, and put the $4.99 pump on it.
