Pravana sells seven different oxidative and direct-dye colour products, and on a shelf they look interchangeable. They are not. Each one answers a different question, and picking the wrong one is how a service ends up needing a correction.
This guide sorts the Pravana colour bar by the two things that actually decide it: what shade family you are going for, and what level the hair is starting at.
First, the split that matters: oxidative or direct dye
Everything in the Pravana colour bar falls on one side of a line.
Oxidative colour — ChromaSilk Permanent, HydraGloss, Express Tones, Platinum Toner, HI LIFTS — is mixed with Creme Developer. The developer opens the cuticle and the colour forms inside the hair. That is what gives permanence and, where the volume allows, lift.
Direct dye — VIVIDS and VIVIDS Neons — is not mixed with anything. It goes on from the tub and it stains the outside of the hair. That is why it needs a pre-lightened canvas (there is nothing to lift with) and why it fades out rather than growing out.
If you remember nothing else: direct dye deposits, oxidative colour builds.
Choosing by shade family
Natural and fashion shades, with grey to cover → ChromaSilk Permanent
107 shades. Low-ammonia creme with pure silk and keratin amino acids, and a dye load heavy enough for up to 100% grey coverage. One 3 oz tube at 1:1.5 makes 7.5 oz of working product — most single-process heads from one tube.
The detail worth knowing: mixed with Zero Lift developer, the same permanent shade becomes a deposit-only demi. You do not need a separate demi line to do a no-lift service.
Vivid, fantasy and pastel → ChromaSilk VIVIDS
39 shades, ammonia-free, non-oxidative, from the tub onto clean dry pre-lightened hair. Every shade intermixes with every other, so treat the range as a palette rather than a menu — blend two for a custom tone, or run several through one head for a multi-dimensional melt.
VIVIDS Clear is the shade that turns the whole line pastel. Dilute any shade with it and you get a softer paste that still applies the same way. Buy it with your second VIVIDS tub, not your fifth.
Fluorescent and blacklight-reactive → VIVIDS Neons
Neon Orange, Green, Yellow and Blue, carrying special dye pigments that read as genuinely fluorescent and go reactive under blacklight. Used alone they are the loudest thing Pravana makes. Used as an additive to a standard VIVIDS formula, they push the brightness up without changing the application.
Tone and shine, no lift, no commitment → ChromaSilk HydraGloss
33 shades of demi-permanent gloss in a no-drip gel-to-creme. Ammonia-free, deposit only, up to 30 washes, up to twice the shine of untreated hair. The texture is what makes it different from a runny demi: it stays where you put it, which is why it works for the precision jobs — root shadows, refreshing faded mid-lengths, blending grey, glazing a finished blonde.
HydraGloss Clear either softens a shade's deposit or runs on its own as a standalone shine glaze.
Toning at the bowl → Express Tones
Nine shades, ammonia-free, five to fifteen minutes. The blondes series tones levels 8 to 10 in five minutes or less. The brunettes series takes five to fifteen and deposits richer and deeper on level 7 and below.
The progressive deposit is the useful property: the same tube gives you a whisper or a full commitment depending purely on how long you leave it. You read the hair as it develops instead of committing at the bowl. It is also a multi-tool — lowlighting, shadow roots, filling before a colour.
A finished platinum, pre-blended → ChromaSilk Platinum Toner
Six shades for level 9 and above: Gold, Blush, Spice, Sand, Smoke, Lilac. Full tone in about five minutes, and because it keeps depositing the longer it processes, ten minutes gives a fuller tonal deposit when the hair wants one. All six intermix. This is the shortcut when you do not want to mix a custom toner out of three tubes and hope.
Blonde from a dark base, without bleach → ChromaSilk HI LIFTS
Four levels of lift, neutralise and tone in a single step. Five shades — cool violet, blue violet, light violet, pale violet, champagne — all violet-based, because violet is what cancels the yellow that lifting a dark base inevitably exposes. Shares the ChromaSilk base and runs on Creme Developer.

The three mistakes worth avoiding
Putting VIVIDS on hair that is not light enough. Direct dye deposits onto what is there. On level 7 hair, a vivid blue reads as a muddy teal and the client blames the colour. Pre-lighten first — Pure Light Ultra is the lightener built for this step.
Reaching for permanent when the hair only needed tone. A faded mid-length does not need a permanent re-application. HydraGloss or a permanent shade on Zero Lift deposits the tone back without adding another oxidative service to hair that has already had several.
Toning on the wrong side of the level break. Express Tones blondes are formulated for levels 8 to 10 and brunettes for 7 and below. Using the wrong series is not a small tonal difference — the deposit behaviour is different.
