milk_shake is easy to love and surprisingly easy to get wrong. First, the one thing every milk_shake shampoo shares
Milk proteins. The brand's whole idea is that milk protein carries a complete amino-acid profile that hair can use for structure, strength and softness, and it is in every care shampoo in the range along with fruit extracts. Most of the care lines also use Integrity 41, a sunflower-seed extract rich in antioxidant polyphenols that protects colour and the fibre from environmental stress. What differs from line to line is the second active — violet pigment, Kakadu plum, organic sugar cane, pracaxi oil, rosemary — and that second active is what you are choosing.
Two more things to know before you shop. Not every milk_shake shampoo is sulfate-free: Colour Care, Curl Passion, Scalp Care Purifying and Energizing are, while Make My Day and the Lifestyling range are not marketed that way, so check the product page if that matters to you. And the brand is scented on purpose — sweet vanilla in Make My Day and the original Leave In, floral in the Flower lines. If you want unscented, this is not your brand.
Coloured hair: Colour Care (classic or Flower)
Colour Care Color Maintainer Shampoo is the brand's best-selling cleanse for a reason: sulfate-free, paraben-free, milk proteins to hydrate and seal the cuticle, Integrity 41 to hold the pigment in place. Sizes are 50 ml ($7.19), 300 ml ($23.69) and 1 L ($47.50). If you colour your hair and have no other complaint, this is the shampoo.
Colour Care Color Maintainer Shampoo Flower is the vegan-friendly version: soy proteins and moringa oleifera instead of milk proteins, a floral scent instead of the sweet one, same three sizes at the same prices. Choose it if you want plant-based care or simply prefer the smell. Both pair with their matching conditioner, and the Colour Care Duo is the cheapest way to buy the pair.
Blonde, grey or white hair: Silver Shine and Icy Blond
Three toning shampoos, three different jobs. Silver Shine Shampoo (300 ml $24.75, 1 L $49.38) is the violet anti-yellow for blonde, grey and white hair — balanced enough for frequent use, with organic berry extracts. Silver Shine Light Shampoo (same sizes and prices) carries less violet pigment for natural blondes and people who wash every day and do not want a lilac cast. Icy Blond Shampoo (300 ml $30.00, 1 L $71.10, travel 70 ml $7.19) uses a black pigment rather than violet to push platinum and level 9–10 blondes toward an ash, silver finish. Brunettes get their own version: Cold Brunette Shampoo (300 ml $24.75, 1 L $49.38) uses blue pigment to cancel the orange and copper that creeps into brown and dark blonde hair between salon visits.
Damaged hair: Everlasting Bonds or Integrity & Strength
This is the choice people most often get backwards. Everlasting Bonds Repair Shampoo (50 ml $10.00, 300 ml $28.75, 750 ml $67.50) is the bond builder — the patent-pending NutriBond complex of rice proteins, amino acids, hyaluronic acid and glycosaminoglycans, for hair that has been bleached, permed, relaxed or over-coloured and is breaking from the inside. Integrity & Strength Nourishing Shampoo (70 ml $10.35, 300 ml $24.75, 1 L $71.10) is for hair that is rough, brittle and dull from heat tools, brushing and weather but has not been chemically wrecked. If your damage came from a bleach bowl, buy Everlasting Bonds; if it came from a flat iron, Integrity & Strength does the job for less. Dry hair: Moisture Plus
Moisture Plus Hydrating Shampoo (50 ml $10.35, 300 ml $26.88, 1 L $71.10) restores the moisture balance with organic papaya extract, hyaluronic acid and Integrity 41. It is the pick when hair is dehydrated but not damaged — coarse, thick, curly-but-worn-straight, or simply living through a Canadian winter. Pair it with the Moisturizing Conditioner (250 ml $24.75).
Frizzy hair: No Frizz Allowed
No Frizz Allowed Perfecting Shampoo (70 ml $7.19, 300 ml $24.75, 1 L $49.38) is new to the Canadian catalogue this season. Milk proteins, amino acids and Kakadu plum extract smooth the cuticle and target the causes of frizz — dryness and porosity — so the result survives humidity. It is the right shampoo for unruly, puffy hair that is not curly; curly hair should go to Curl Passion instead.
Wavy and curly hair: Curl Passion
Curl Passion Shampoo (300 ml $23.69, 1 L $56.99) is sulfate- and SLES-free and built around organic pracaxi and babassu oils from the Amazon rainforest, so it cleans without stripping the natural oils curls need to clump and bounce. Fine, limp hair: Volume Solution
Volume Solution Volumizing Shampoo (300 ml $22.00, 1 L $68.40) is the lightest cleanse in the range — organic sugar cane for body, milk and rice proteins for strength — and the cheapest 300 ml shampoo milk_shake makes. Use it when hair goes flat by noon. If the hair is fine and thinning, move to Scalp Care instead.
Scalp problems: the four Scalp Care shampoos
Scalp Care is really four shampoos with one label. Energizing Blend Shampoo (300 ml $24.75, 1 L $42.81) is sulfate-free, with organic rosemary, sage and Fioravanti balm to stimulate micro-circulation for fine, thinning and fragile hair. Normalizing Blend Shampoo (same sizes and prices) balances sebum for greasy roots without the rebound over-production a harsh cleanser causes. Purifying Blend Shampoo (same prices) is the sulfate-free anti-dandruff option with AFA seaweed, organic nettle and yarrow. And Deep Detox Shampoo (300 ml $24.75, 1 L $71.10) removes copper and lead residue from hard water and the environment — the reason hair goes dull and colour behaves unpredictably. Use Deep Detox every second or third wash, not daily.
Shine: insta.light
