Hard Wax, Soft Wax or Pebbles? The Satin Smooth Format Guide

Satin Smooth sells four things that all get called "wax" and they are not interchangeable. The price per gram is not what separates them — the strip, the melt and the applicator are. This guide is about choosing the format first, because once the format is right the shade and the scent barely matter.

Everything below is Satin Smooth's own published guidance, quoted from the How To and Warnings tabs on satinsmooth.com. Prices are what we charge on prohair.ca as of 18 September 2026.

One thing to know before anything else: there is no temperature number

Satin Smooth does not publish a working temperature in degrees for any wax or any warmer. We checked all 69 products on the brand's site, including every How To and every Warnings block. The brand's guidance is entirely by consistency and by touch, and this guide follows it exactly. If you have seen a °C range attached to this brand somewhere, it did not come from the manufacturer — and a number you cannot source is the kind of thing that burns a client.

What actually differs

Soft & cream strip wax — needs a strip

Applied in a thin layer in the direction of hair growth, then an epilating strip goes over it, is smoothed firmly with the growth, and pulled quickly against it while the skin is held taut. Melt instruction, verbatim: "Heat wax until it has a syrup-like texture." The brand's own readiness test is to dip an applicator — the consistency should be "like a syrup consistency not thick or lumpy."

Ten soft and cream waxes are live: Aloe Vera & Vitamin E ($22.00), Tea Tree ($22.00), Ultra Sensitive Zinc Oxide ($22.00), Silver Tourmaline ($22.00), Amethyst Crystal ($22.00), Golden Quartz ($22.00), Lavender & Chamomile ($24.99), Honey with Vitamin E ($35.99), Deluxe Cream ($35.99), and the beBare soy system ($29.33).

Hard wax — becomes the strip

No strip at all. Applied thick and even, allowed to set, then lifted by the thicker edge you deliberately leave at the end of the stroke. Melt instruction, verbatim: "Heat hard wax at a medium temperature for approximately 30-40 minutes. Mix wax thoroughly into a creamy caramel-like consistency." Readiness test: dip a disposable applicator — the wax "should stick onto applicator without running off."

Live in a can: Calendula Gold & Tea Tree ($22.00), Citrus Mojito Thin-Film ($22.00), Titanium Blue Thin-Film ($35.99), Wild Cherry with Vitamin E ($24.99).

Multidirectional hard wax — a different melt sequence

The two Multidirectional waxes (Coconut Aroma and Rose Aroma, $23.83 each) have their own instruction and it is a two-stage one: "Set temperature setting on warmer to 'Hot' for 25-30 minutes. Wax should be a thick, caramel-like consistency in the center and soft around the sides. Once desired consistency is achieved, set temperature to 'Ready'." Then test on a small area inside the wrist. Applied thin in any direction of growth and smoothed back the opposite way — which is where the name comes from — then pressed down with the fingertips until slightly tacky. The brand warns that wax left too thick or on the skin too long "becomes brittle."

Rose Aroma is one of only two products in the whole range the brand describes as vegan.

Pebble wax — hard wax you portion

Same chemistry as a hard wax, supplied as beads so you melt one service's worth. And this is the instruction people get wrong, so here it is in full: "Pour the pebble drops into an empty metal wax can and heat them in a Satin Smooth® or other professional wax warmer. Set heat to READY for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Do not melt wax completely. Wax should be thick in consistency and have a center island of non-melted wax. Wax should be soft around the sides."

You are meant to stop short of a full melt. The readiness test is the wrist test: "dipping applicator into wax and applying a small amount to the inside of the wrist. If wax runs off applicator, it's too hot – wax should cling to the applicator."

Five pebble waxes are live: Calendula Gold & Tea Tree ($51.33), Citrus Mojito Thin-Film ($51.33), Titanium Blue Thin-Film ($51.33), Wild Cherry with Vitamin E ($51.33) and Golden Quartz Thin-Film Flex ($42.17).

"Cream" and "thin-film" are adjectives, not categories

A cream wax is a soft strip wax with an opaque, spreadable texture — Aloe Vera, Zinc Oxide, Lavender & Chamomile and Deluxe Cream are all cream soft waxes and all need a strip. A thin-film wax is a hard wax that stays flexible as it sets; Citrus Mojito and Titanium Blue are thin-film hard waxes and need no strip. Getting these two words backwards is the most common ordering mistake on the brand.

The one thing pebbles and beBare both require

Neither is melted in its own bag or bottle. Both sets of directions open by decanting into an empty metal can or a removable insert pot and heating that in the warmer. If you buy pebbles without one of these, you cannot run the service:

The rule that applies to every format

Straight from the brand's directions: never reapply wax over an area you have already waxed in the same service. It is in the soft-wax instructions word for word — "Never reapply wax in the same area" — and it is the single most useful sentence in the whole document.

And before any of it: pine resin (rosin) and honey are main properties of Satin Smooth hair-removal products, in the brand's own words, and anyone with an allergy to either needs a test area before a full service.
