Good shears last for years if you look after them. A simple routine protects the edge.
Every day
- Wipe hair and product off the blades after each client.
- Disinfect by wiping with a suitable disinfectant; never soak the pivot.
- Close the shear and store it in its case.
Weekly
Open the blades to 90 degrees, place a drop of shear oil at the pivot, open and close a few times and wipe off the excess.
Check the tension
Hold the shear by the finger ring with the blades up, lift the thumb blade to 90 degrees and let go: it should fall to about a third closed. Adjust the screw if it drops fully shut or stays open.
Sharpening
Use a professional shear sharpener; household sharpeners ruin the edge.
