The SexyHair Volume Guide: Root Lift, Blow-Dry Body and Texture Powders

Volume is what SexyHair is for, and BIG is the range that does it — 16 of the 39 products we carry. They are not interchangeable. They divide cleanly by when you apply them, and getting that right matters more than which one you pick.

On damp hair, before the dryer

This is where volume is actually built. Everything you do later is maintenance.

  • Root Pump ($27.00) — a spray mousse aimed at the roots, not worked through the lengths. The default choice.
  • Root Pump Plus ($27.00) — the high-hold version. Fine hair that drops by early afternoon wants this one.
  • Big Altitude ($26.50) — a conventional bodifying blow-dry mousse for body through the mid-lengths rather than lift at the root.
  • Blow Dry Volumizing Gel ($27.00) — a heat-activated blowout primer. Gel rather than foam, so it holds a smoother shape.
  • Blow It Up ($26.50) — gel-to-foam. Applies like a foam, sets like a gel; the compromise between the two above.

Pick one. Layering two root products is the most common way people make fine hair heavy.

On dry hair, when it has dropped

  • Powder Play (15 g, $26.50) — tapped into dry roots for instant lift and a gritty, matte grip. The fastest volume in the range.
  • Powder Play Lite (12 g, $26.50) — the softer version, for finer hair or anyone who found the original too matte.
  • Creme 2 Powder Play (101 ml, $26.50) — goes on as a creme and turns powdery as it dries, so it can be spread through the mid-lengths instead of only at the root.
  • Volume Flex Texture Spray ($26.50, or a $10.75 mini) — a microfibre texture spray whose volume reactivates when you touch it, which makes it the useful one to carry.
  • Fun Raiser ($27.00) — a 4-in-1 dry texture spray, the closest thing here to a do-everything second-day product.
  • Dry Shampoo ($26.50) — absorbs oil and adds volume. This is a day-two product, not a volume product you use on clean hair.

To hold it

Spray & Play for brushable hold, Spray & Play Harder when it drops, What A Tease for backcombed height, Spray & Stay when it truly must not move. Full comparison in the hairspray guide.

A three-product volume routine that works

  1. Root Pump on damp roots, then blow-dry with your head tipped forward.
  2. Powder Play tapped into the roots once the hair is dry and cool.
  3. Spray & Play over the top — brushable, so you can still shape it.

That is $80.50 at current prices and it is the sequence the brand is built around. Everything else in BIG is a variation on one of those three steps.

What not to do

Do not use a powder on damp hair — it clumps. Do not apply root mousse through the ends; it weighs down the part of the hair that has no volume problem. And do not expect a volumizing product to fix hair that is flat because it is dirty: that is what the Dry Shampoo is for.
