The short version: oil is for the skin and the hair, balm is for the shape. If you are in the first month of growth and it itches, buy the oil — the itch is the reason most beards do not survive week three, and it comes from the skin underneath, not the hair. Once the beard is long enough to move around on its own, the balm starts earning its place.
They are not mutually exclusive. On a long beard, oil first while damp, balm after.
Decision two: Shave Cream or Clear Shave Gel?
This one is decided by your skin and by what you are shaving around.

The lather is the point: it keeps the blade from dragging, which is what actually causes most razor burn. Clear Shave Gel — $17.25, 120 ml
Transparent, light and cooling. Because you can see straight through it, you can see exactly where the edge of your beard is while you are cutting it — which is impossible under white foam and is the single biggest reason to own this. Buy this if you keep a beard or a defined neckline, or your skin is oily and creams feel heavy.
The step nearly everyone skips
A pre-shave cleanse. The Exfoliating Cleanser ($17.25, 120 ml) uses pumice and charcoal to lift hairs that are lying flat against the skin so the blade catches them the first time. If you keep going over the same patch twice and still find stubble, this is why, and this is the fix. It is gentle enough to use daily on normal, oily and combination skin.
Afterwards
Hydrating Moisturizer ($17.25, 120 ml) goes on straight after. It is oil-free and dries to a genuinely matte finish, so it will not leave you shining an hour later, and it is calm enough to go onto skin you have just dragged a blade across.
Aftershave Cologne ($26.48, 100 ml) is the fragrance, not the treatment — a warm woody citrus blend, built low-alcohol so it does not sting a freshly shaved face, and it holds through the day rather than disappearing by eleven.
