Colouring your hair is the easy part. Keeping it looking like it did when you left the salon is the part that takes a routine. Matrix has five ranges aimed at colour-treated hair, and they are not interchangeable — they solve five different failure modes. Buy the wrong one and you will spend three months wondering why your expensive shampoo is not working.
This guide sorts them out: what each range does mechanically, which problem it belongs to, and how to combine two of them when your hair has more than one thing going wrong.
First, name the problem
Colour-treated hair goes wrong in five distinct ways, and each has its own range:
- The colour is washing out. It is still the right shade, just weaker and lighter each week. → Color Obsessed.
- The colour is the right shade but looks dull. Flat, no light bouncing off it. → Glow Mania.
- Blonde or grey hair is turning yellow. → So Silver.
- Brown or highlighted hair is turning orange. → Brass Off.
- Fashion or vivid colour is vanishing fast. → Keep Me Vivid.
Two of these — So Silver and Brass Off — are toning ranges that actively deposit pigment. The other three are protection ranges that change nothing about your tone. Mixing those two jobs up is the single most common mistake in this category.
Color Obsessed — slowing the fade
Colour fades because the dye molecule oxidises and because each wash swells the cuticle and lets a little pigment escape. Color Obsessed attacks both: an antioxidant complex protects the molecule, and the surfactant system is mild enough to keep cuticle swelling down. Matrix rates it for roughly 32 washes of protection.
What it does not do is change your tone. If your hair has gone brassy, Color Obsessed will faithfully preserve the brass. It is the right choice when your colour is behaving and you simply want it to last.

Best for: the default routine for anyone with salon colour and no second problem.
Glow Mania — shine, not colour
Shine is a physical property, not a chemical one. Light reflects evenly off a smooth, closed cuticle and scatters off a rough, lifted one. Colouring roughens the cuticle, which is why freshly coloured hair can be exactly the right shade and still look dead.
Glow Mania uses glycolic acid to smooth and re-seal the cuticle surface. It is a genuinely different mechanism from Color Obsessed, and the two are complementary rather than competing — plenty of people run Color Obsessed as their everyday wash and Glow Mania's mask weekly.
The range: Glow Mania Shampoo, Conditioner, and the two products that make it worth buying — Glazing Queen Super Gloss Mask, a lamination-style treatment available in a 100 ml try-me and a 500 ml salon tub, and Glow Gatekeeper, a leave-in that seals the result between washes. The Complete Color Care three-piece system bundles shampoo, conditioner and gloss mask together and is the sensible entry point.
Best for: dull, flat-looking colour; anyone chasing a glass-hair finish.
So Silver — violet for yellow
Lightened hair reveals warm underlying pigment. On blonde, grey and silver hair that warmth shows up as yellow, and yellow is cancelled by violet. So Silver is the violet range.
It is strongly pigmented — more so than most drugstore purple shampoos — so treat it as a treatment rather than a daily wash. One or two uses a week is right for most people; daily use will push blonde noticeably cool and can leave a faint lilac cast on very porous hair. Alternate it with Color Obsessed on the days in between.
So Silver Purple Shampoo and So Silver Purple Conditioner come in 300 ml and 1 L. The most useful product in the range is the Triple Power Toning Mask: because you control leave-on time, one tub covers a two-minute refresh and a ten-minute correction. The So Silver Duo is the matched pair.
Best for: blonde, platinum, silver, grey and highlighted hair going yellow.
Brass Off — blue for orange
Here is the rule worth memorising: violet cancels yellow, blue cancels orange. Brown hair does not lighten to yellow. It lightens through orange, and violet pigment will barely touch it. This is why brunettes with balayage so often report that purple shampoo "did nothing" — it was the wrong colour on the wheel.
Brass Off deposits blue-violet instead. Brass Off Blue Shampoo and Brass Off Blue Conditioner handle maintenance; the Custom Neutralization Mask is the weekly heavy lifter and, like the So Silver mask, is timed rather than fixed-strength. The Brass Off Duo pairs the shampoo and conditioner.
Best for: brunettes with highlights, balayage, ombre or grown-out lightening turning orange.
Keep Me Vivid — fashion and direct-dye colour
Vivid colour is a completely different chemistry. Direct dyes — the pinks, blues, teals and purples — sit on the hair rather than bonding inside it, and ordinary sulfate shampoo lifts them off within a handful of washes. No amount of antioxidant protection helps, because the problem is mechanical stripping, not oxidation.
The answer is a sulfate-free wash, and that is what Keep Me Vivid is. The Keep Me Vivid Duo is sold as a matched shampoo and conditioner pair in 300 ml and 1 L. Keep Me Vivid Color Lamination Spray adds a sealing layer and a glass-like shine on top, which matters because vivid shades look best when they are also glossy.
Best for: pastel, neon and fashion shades; anyone whose colour is fading in weeks rather than months.
Combining ranges
Most people with coloured hair have two problems, not one. The ranges layer cleanly if you keep the jobs separate:
- Blonde, brassy and dull: So Silver twice a week, Color Obsessed in between, Glazing Queen mask weekly.
- Brunette balayage going orange and dry: Brass Off twice a week, Food For Soft the rest of the time.
- Bleached blonde that is also breaking: tone with So Silver, but rebuild with Unbreak My Blonde — see the bond repair guide.

Things that will not help
- Purple shampoo on orange hair. Covered above. Use blue.
- A toning shampoo as your only shampoo. Toning ranges are not built for daily cleansing and will over-deposit.
- Clarifying shampoo on fresh colour. Alternate Action is excellent at stripping build-up — and it will strip colour too. Use it before a colour service, not after.
- Hot water. No product compensates for washing colour-treated hair in very hot water.
The bottom line
Fading → Color Obsessed. Dull → Glow Mania. Yellow → So Silver. Orange → Brass Off. Vivid → Keep Me Vivid. Every one of these is stocked in a 1 L salon size as well as the 300 ml retail bottle, and the litre is far better value once you know a range suits you.
