Styling is where the KMS range is deepest and where it is easiest to buy the wrong thing. Across HairPlay, HairStay, AddVolume, CurlUp, ThermaShape and ConsciousStyle, ProHair.ca currently lists more than thirty stylers, and their names describe formats (wax, paste, foam, spray) rather than results. This guide flips that around: pick the finish you want, then the product. Every description below comes from the official KMS Canada product pages; sizes are what we currently stock.
One rule of thumb before you start: KMS sorts its stylers by when you use them. Prep and shape products go on towel-dried hair before drying; texture products mostly go on dry hair; finishing sprays are the last step. Most people need one from each stage at most — not one from each line.
The 60-second answer
- Beachy, matte, undone: HairPlay Sea Salt Spray or HairPlay Dry Wax.
- Volume at the root: AddVolume Root and Body Lift; all-over fullness: AddVolume Styling Foam.
- Defined curls or waves: CurlUp Control Creme (curls) or CurlUp Wave Foam (waves).
- Hold you can brush out and restyle: HairStay Working Hairspray. Hold that stays put: HairStay Firm Finishing Hairspray.
- Short hair, matte, pliable: HairPlay Molding Paste or ConsciousStyle Styling Putty.
Step 1 — Prep and shape (towel-dried hair)
For volume: AddVolume
KMS builds the AddVolume stylers around the same promise — lift, fullness that lasts up to 72 hours, and heat protection up to 230 °C / 446 °F — in three formats. AddVolume Styling Foam (300 ml, also as a duo) is worked through towel-dried hair for all-over body and grip; KMS credits it with up to 70% more volume and with making thin ends appear thicker. Root and Body Lift (200 ml) is sprayed at the roots for targeted lift. Volumizing Spray (200 ml) gives buildable, all-over fullness. KMS lists the foam, the root lift and the volumizing spray for fine to medium, limp hair.
For a blow-dry that holds its shape: ThermaShape
ThermaShape Shaping Blow Dry (200 ml) is described by KMS as giving light body, movement and texture with lasting shape — the product for a full, natural-looking blowout rather than a stiff one. ThermaShape Hot Flex Spray (200 ml) is a medium-hold prep spray for heat-activated shaping that KMS says is ideal for creating curls with a hot iron, especially in straight hair. For straight, smooth results the Straightening Creme belongs here too; our frizz and smoothing guide covers it.
For curls and waves: CurlUp
The four CurlUp stylers are aimed at different patterns and hair weights, and KMS is explicit about it:
- CurlUp Control Creme (150 ml, or a duo) — shapes and bundles curls with frizz reduction for up to 72 hours; KMS lists it as ideal for curls and medium to thick hair. Emulsify through towel-dried hair, diffuse or air-dry.
- CurlUp Perfecting Lotion (100 ml) — defines natural curls without crunch and can be reactivated by scrunching during the day; ideal for curls and fine to medium hair.
- CurlUp Wave Foam (200 ml) — a light gel-to-foam that enhances wave formation with a soft finish, 72-hour frizz control and heat protection up to 230 °C; ideal for wavy, fine to medium hair.
- CurlUp Twisting Style Balm (230 ml) — deep hydration for coils and tight curls, with castor oil and shea butter; KMS credits it with reducing shrinkage by up to 70% and lists it as ideal for coily hair and air-drying.
Light, plant-forward prep: ConsciousStyle
ConsciousStyle Multi-Benefit Spray (45 ml, or a 2 × 200 ml duo) is one spray that KMS lists as a blow-dry styler on towel-dried hair and as a finishing spray on dry hair, with lightweight hold, hydration and heat protection; 79% of its ingredients are of natural origin and it is free from SLS/SLES sulfates and silicones. A sensible single product for someone who wants light control and nothing else.
Step 2 — Texture and definition (mostly dry hair)
HairPlay, by finish
- Beachy, matte, fuller: HairPlay Sea Salt Spray (200 ml, or a duo) — Dead Sea salt for fullness, a matte finish and enhanced waves. Spray into towel-dried hair and air- or blow-dry for light texture; spray into dry hair and blast-dry for more grip. Listed for straight to curly hair.
- Undone, flexible, dimensional: HairPlay Dry Wax (150 ml, or a duo) — a lightweight spray wax for a perfectly undone finish with flexible hold. Shake, spray into dry hair, scrunch.
- Reworkable, weightless: HairPlay Playable Texture (200 ml) — builds texture with each application and lets you rework the style any time. Spray into dry hair and shape with your hands.
- Airy volume plus oil absorption: HairPlay Dry Texture Spray (250 ml) — texture and airy volume at the roots that KMS calls a great alternative to dry shampoo and a base for second-day styles. Listed for straight to wavy hair.
- Day-two grit for fine hair: HairPlay Messing Creme (150 ml, or a duo) — instant day-after texture and workable grip; KMS says it makes fine hair appear denser, especially at the roots. Work through towel-dried hair and blow-dry.
- Soft beach texture with hydration: HairPlay Beach Style Creme (100 ml) — airy texture and touchable hold with weightless hydration, for short hair and longer layers.
- Pliable, natural shine, short to medium hair: HairPlay Molding Paste (100 ml or 150 ml, or a duo) — texture with a modern natural finish, pliable hold and control for medium to coarse hair. Towel-dried for shaping, dry for definition.
- Gel hold with a wax feel: HairPlay Liquid Wax (100 ml) — holds like a gel, styles like a wax, flexible support with shine. Blow-dry in for movement, re-apply dry for a wax finish.
- Wet look or strong glossy hold: HairPlay Styling Gel (200 ml or 750 ml) — glossy shine, long-lasting hold, no flaking. Blow-dry for hold, air-dry for a wet look.
- Refresh between washes: HairPlay Makeover Spray (75 ml travel or 250 ml, or a duo) — dry shampoo that absorbs oil, refreshes limp or day-old styles and builds bulk into fine hair.
Instant root lift: AddVolume Styling Powder
AddVolume Styling Powder (10 g) gives instant volume, lift and texture at the root; KMS also recommends it as a weightless base for updos. The one AddVolume product that belongs on dry hair.
Matte, plant-based paste: ConsciousStyle Styling Putty
ConsciousStyle Styling Putty (75 ml) gives control, definition and a matte-textured finish with long-lasting hold that KMS says does not go stiff; 84% of ingredients are of natural origin, with hydrolyzed corn starch and carnauba wax doing the holding. Melt a small amount in your hands and work through towel-dried or dry hair. The alternative to Molding Paste for anyone who wants a matte finish and a shorter ingredient list.
Step 3 — Finish (dry hair, last step)
HairStay is the finishing line, and every product in it is sprayed 25–30 cm from dry hair. The difference is how much hold and how much shine:
- HairStay Working Hairspray (239 g, or 75 ml travel) — flexible hold that is easy to brush, rework and shape; KMS notes that the more you spray, the more it holds, plus 72-hour humidity protection and heat protection up to 230 °C. The everyday hairspray for most people.
- HairStay Firm Finishing Hairspray (250 g, or 75 ml travel) — quick-drying, strong, durable hold for up to 72 hours with no flaking or residue. For updos, events and hair that must not move.
- HairStay Anti-Humidity Seal (150 ml, 75 ml, or a duo) — a 72-hour humidity-blocking shine spray that KMS credits with eliminating up to 90% of frizz and flyaways. Not a hold product; a weatherproofing one.
- HairStay Dry Oil Hairspray (150 ml or 75 ml) — light, flexible hold with hydration and shine; KMS says it bundles and defines curls and waves with soft texture. The finisher for wavy and curly styles.
- HairStay Hard Wax (50 ml) — the one HairStay product that is not a spray: a strong-hold wax with a matte finish.

If you only buy one thing
HairStay Working Hairspray. It is the one KMS styler that suits every hair type, works on a blowout, a curl set or a paste style, brushes out without flaking, and doubles as heat protection. Fine hair that needs body first should start with AddVolume Styling Foam instead.
Smart buying tips

FAQ
Paste, putty, wax or clay — what is the difference in KMS terms?
Molding Paste gives pliable hold with natural shine; ConsciousStyle Styling Putty gives a matte finish with plant-based hold; HairStay Hard Wax gives strong hold, matte. Dry Wax is a spray, not a pot, and gives the lightest, most undone result of the four.
Which styler doubles as heat protection?
KMS lists heat protection up to 230 °C on AddVolume Styling Foam, Root and Body Lift, Volumizing Spray, CurlUp Wave Foam, HairStay Working Hairspray and ConsciousStyle Multi-Benefit Spray, and on the ThermaShape prep products. If you use a styler from that list you do not need a separate protectant.
Can I use HairPlay texture products on curly hair?
Sea Salt Spray is listed for straight to curly hair and Dry Wax, Playable Texture and Molding Paste for straight to coily. Dry Texture Spray is listed for straight to wavy only. For definition rather than texture, CurlUp is the better line.
Do I need a primer and a foam and a spray?
No. Pick one prep product for the shape, one texture product if you want texture, and one finishing spray if the style needs to last. Three products is the ceiling, not the starting point.
Bottom line
AddVolume for lift, CurlUp for definition, ThermaShape for shape that comes from heat, HairPlay for texture and finish, HairStay to lock it in, ConsciousStyle for a lighter, plant-forward version of the same jobs. Choose the finish first, then the format.
