Australian Barber-Built — Pomade, Matte Stylers, Wash, Beard and Shave

Uppercut Deluxe was started in 2013 by two barbers, Steve Purcell and Nick Barnett, working out of a shop on Sydney's Northern Beaches. That is the most useful fact about the brand, because it explains the shape of the range: it was built around what a barber reaches for during a service, then extended outwards — which is why it runs from pomade and paste into wash, beard, shave, face and scalp, and then keeps going into capes, combs, brushes and shop fittings.

It also explains the finishes. The tinned solids are the heart of it: the original Deluxe Pomade for strong hold and high shine, Matte Pomade for the same hold with no shine at all, Featherweight Paste, Clay Pomade, Monster Hold and Easy Hold Cream — most of them in a 30 g travel tin, a 100 g retail tin and a 300 g backbar tub, so you can try a finish for $8 before committing to it. Around them sit the liquids and powders: Clay Spray and Salt Spray for grip before you style, Foam Tonic — the only product in the line carrying heat protection — and two styling powders for lift at the root.

Matte Pomade is the same hold with no shine, now stocked standalone rather than only inside a duo. The products that decide what your pomade has to work with. Clay Spray ($22.50) and Salt Spray ($18.39) go into damp hair before you style and leave grip at the root — they are pre-stylers, which is the part most people get wrong. Styling Powder ($19.69) and Skull Dust lift flat roots. Foam Tonic ($21.00) is a light-hold foam and the only product in the range with heat protection built in. Control Cream and Texture Cream are the two cream finishes: one groups curls, one is pliable and reworkable.

Wash & Scalp

3 in 1 Wash ($17.25 / 240 ml, $52.50 / 1 L) is the gentle everyday default for hair, face and body — and the litre is 27% cheaper per millilitre. Detox & Degrease uses charcoal and a wax-removal complex to strip styling product out; use it weekly, not daily, especially if you live in the matte tins. Clear Scalp Shampoo clears a congested scalp and soothes it on the way out, which is what makes it safe for frequent use.

Uppercut Deluxe now makes a conditioner, and this is it. Strength & Restore Shampoo and Conditioner are a matched pair at $17.25 for 240 ml, with a 1 L backbar litre of each at $52.50, aimed at hair that feels weak, dull or thinning. The duo pairs them by tier — 240 ml + 240 ml for home, 1 L + 1 L for the backbar. Beard & Shave

The most complete half of the range. Beard Oil ($21.00, 30 ml, argan and jojoba) softens the hair and calms the skin underneath at any length; Beard Balm ($21.00) adds light control once the beard is past stubble. Shave Cream ($17.25, 120 g) lathers rich with allantoin for skin that goes red; Clear Shave Gel ($17.25, 120 ml) is transparent so you can see the line you are cutting. Aftershave Cologne ($26.48, 100 ml) is a low-alcohol woody citrus that lasts.

Skin

Two products, both $17.25 and both 120 ml. The Exfoliating Cleanser uses pumice and charcoal and is gentle enough for daily use — its real job is pre-shave, lifting flat hairs so the blade takes them first time. The Hydrating Moisturizer is oil-free and finishes properly matte, which is the thing men with oily skin normally cannot find, and it is calm enough to go straight onto a just-shaved face.

Not accessories — the things a barber actually holds. The CB11 Rake Comb ($13.50) has wide-set teeth for dense hair and a softer comb line; the CT9 Styling Comb is the long wide-set parting comb; the CT5 Tortoise Shell is a dual fine-and-wide pocket comb; the CT7 Flip Comb folds away. The Vent Brush ($12.00) has a vented body and ball-tip bristles for blow-drying, and the Quiff Roller Brush builds root lift under a dryer. Pomade, Paste or Clay?

Best for: Anyone choosing a tin

Hold and shine are two separate dials. Deluxe Pomade is strong hold and high shine; Matte Pomade is the same hold with none. Monster Hold is firmer than both and suits coarse hair; Featherweight Paste is the lightest and stays reworkable all day; Clay Pomade is dry and gritty; Easy Hold Cream is the low-hold natural one. Buy the 30 g tin first — at $8.00 it is cheaper than guessing.

Volume & Texture

Best for: Fine or flat hair

Clay Spray and Salt Spray add grip rather than hold. Into damp hair, roots first, then dry with your fingers — they leave a dry, slightly rough texture that everything afterwards can hold onto. They are pre-stylers, which is the part most people get wrong. Styling Powder does the same job at the root, dry, after drying.

Cleanse & Condition

Best for: Anyone building a routine

New this season, and the thing the brand was missing: Strength & Restore Shampoo and Conditioner, 240 ml each or a 1 L litre each, for hair that feels weak, dull or thinning. Deep Clean & Scalp Reset

Best for: Daily product users

Matte stylers are wax-based and an ordinary shampoo leaves a film behind, which is why hair goes flatter and duller through the week. Detox & Degrease once a week resets it. Clear Scalp Shampoo is the other one — for a congested or irritated scalp, and gentle enough to use often.

Frizz, Curl & Heat

Best for: Wavy and curly hair

Control Cream for definition without crunch, Texture Cream for a pliable reworkable finish, Foam Tonic for curls that need encouraging rather than controlling. Beard, Shave & Skin

Oil is for the skin and the hair; balm is for the shape. Under about two months of growth, oil only — the itch that ends most beards in week three comes from the skin underneath. Shave Cream for razor burn and dry skin, Clear Shave Gel for oily skin and for edging a line you need to see. Exfoliating Cleanser before, Hydrating Moisturizer after.

Does Uppercut Deluxe make a conditioner?
Yes — as of this season. Strength & Restore Conditioner is the brand's first, and it comes in a 240 ml retail bottle ($17.25) and a 1 L backbar litre ($52.50), with a matching Strength & Restore Shampoo and a duo that pairs them by tier. This page said the opposite until today, and it was true when it was written: before this line landed, Uppercut made washes and no conditioner at all. If your hair is long, coloured, dry or damaged, this is the one to add — and all three Uppercut routines on this page are built around it.
Where is the Matte Pomade, and what does it cost?
On its own shelf, at $19.69 for the 100 g tin. That is a change: for a while the only way to buy it here was inside the Matte Pomade & 3 in 1 Wash Duo at $33.00. It is now stocked standalone in all three sizes — 30 g at $8.00, 100 g at $19.69, 300 g at $52.50. The duo is still good value if you want the wash too, but it is no longer the route to the pomade.
Which pomade should I actually buy?
Decide hold and shine separately. Deluxe Pomade is strong hold and high shine, water-soluble, the classic barbershop finish. Matte Pomade is the same hold with no shine. Monster Hold is firmer than either and is the one for coarse or thick hair that shrugs a normal pomade off. Featherweight Paste is light and stays reworkable; Clay Pomade is dry and gritty; Easy Hold Cream is low hold and natural. Every one of those except the specials comes in a 30 g tin for $8.00 — buy that before you buy the 100 g.
What is the difference between the 30 g, 100 g and 300 g tins?
Fill only — same formula. The 30 g is a travel tin and the honest way to try a finish; the 100 g is the retail tin most people buy; the 300 g is a backbar tub for a shop and is not a sensible first purchase. Per gram the 300 g is the cheapest and the 30 g the dearest, which is the usual shape. Our routines always name the 100 g, because that is the retail size the brand leads with.
Which shampoo actually removes clay and pomade?
Detox & Degrease. It carries activated charcoal and a dedicated wax-removal complex, which a normal shampoo does not. Use it once a week: it is a deep clean, and used daily it will strip more than you want. If your scalp is the problem rather than your hair, Clear Scalp Shampoo is the one you want instead. And the original Deluxe Pomade is water-soluble, so for that one the 3 in 1 Wash is genuinely enough.
Shave Cream or Clear Shave Gel?
Neither is better; they answer different questions. The Shave Cream gives a dense lather and carries allantoin, so it is the pick for dry or sensitive skin and for anyone whose neck is raw by the end. The gel is transparent and light, which matters enormously if you are shaving around a beard line and need to see the edge, and it suits oily skin that finds creams heavy. Both are $17.25.
Is the 1 L size worth it?
On the arithmetic, yes, if you use enough of it. The 240 ml 3 in 1 Wash at $17.25 is 7.19 cents per millilitre; the 1 L at $52.50 is 5.25 cents — 27% less per wash, and the same ratio holds on the Strength & Restore shampoo and conditioner. It is the obvious call for a backbar. It is not what we put in a take-home routine, because a litre at a basin is a professional purchase, not a shelf one.
Are the three barber capes different?
Only in artwork. Bridge Burner, Collage and Groomzilla are the same cape underneath — identical cut, identical eight snap closures, identical past-knee length, all $36.43. Pick the print that suits the shop. Worth knowing: these three artworks are discontinued by Uppercut Deluxe, so if you want matching capes for a shop, buy them together.
Why are the combs, brushes and capes not in any of your routines?
Because a ProHair routine may only contain take-home retail haircare, and that is decided by the product's Shopify category, not by our opinion. Combs, brushes, capes, the spray bottle, the station mat and the candle are all outside it, and so are the gift sets and the litre backbar sizes. That is deliberate: a routine should be a sequence you can actually use at home, not a shopping list. You will find all of those on the range cards above instead.
Is Uppercut Deluxe worth the price against a drugstore brand?
Most of the line sits between $17.25 and $26.48, which is professional tier, and the 30 g tins come in at $8.00. What you are paying for is formulation aimed at a specific problem — heat protection in the Foam Tonic, a wax-removal complex in Detox & Degrease, allantoin in the Shave Cream, an oil-free matte finish in the moisturizer. If you just want clean hair and a cheap shave, a drugstore product will do that and we will say so.
