A good salon cape is used dozens of times a week, and how you wash it decides how long it keeps working. Flean'Up capes and smocks have two parts that need care: the treated fabric, which repels water and stains and resists static, and the silicone collar that seals the neckline. These steps keep both working.
Between clients
- Unsnap the cape and lift it away from the client, folding the outside inwards so clippings stay inside.
- Shake it out over the floor or a bin, well away from the chair.
- Wipe the silicone collar with a damp cloth if product or colour has touched it.
Machine washing
- Wash at 40 °C. Hotter washes are not needed and wear the finish faster.
- Do not use fabric softener. It coats the fibres and cancels the anti-static treatment, so hair starts clinging again.
- Do not overload the machine, so the capes come out with fewer creases.
- Skip the tumble dryer: it weakens the anti-static finish. Hang each cape on a hanger as soon as the cycle ends.
- Iron only if you really need to, at low temperature, and never on the collar.
Looking after the collar
The silicone collar is durable and will not crack or stretch with normal use, but it can be cut. Never rest scissors, clippers or a razor directly on the collar, and keep hot tools off it.
How often to wash
Wash after any colour or chemical service, and at the end of each day for capes used on cuts. A rotation of several capes lets one dry while the others are in use.

Why is hair suddenly sticking to my cape?
Fabric softener or a tumble dryer has usually worn down the anti-static finish. Wash without softener and air-dry.
Can I bleach the cape?
No. Bleach damages the water-repellent treatment. Treat colour marks promptly with a mild detergent instead.
