Maria Nila is one of those brands where people fall for the packaging first and only work out the range afterwards. That is a shame, because the range is unusually logical: nine care collections, each built around a single active ingredient, each solving one specific problem. Once you know which active you need, the shopping decision takes about thirty seconds.
This guide is the map. It covers what the brand is, who it suits, who it genuinely does not suit, and which collection to buy for your hair — with the honest limits stated up front rather than buried.
Where Maria Nila came from
Maria Nila began in 1999 in a garage in southern Sweden. The Wikström family wanted professional haircare that was kind to animals and the environment, and they named the company after founder Ann's great-grandmother — a woman who lived by the Sámi principle of respecting nature and wildlife. It is still family-run. It is still made in Sweden, in the company's own factory. And it now sells in 45 countries across three continents.
That "own factory" detail matters more than it sounds. Maria Nila formulates, fills and ships from a single plant in southern Sweden that runs to GMP and ISO 22716 standards. Most brands at this price point outsource manufacturing. Owning it is what lets Maria Nila make the certification claims it makes and stand behind them.
The brand difference: certifications that are actually audited
"Vegan" and "cruelty-free" are used loosely in beauty. Maria Nila holds three separate marks, and each covers a different thing:
- Vegan Society — certifies the ingredients are 100% vegan. The Vegan Society is the oldest vegan organisation in the world, founded by the man who coined the word.
- PETA — certifies no animal testing and vegan ingredients.
- Leaping Bunny, run by Cruelty Free International — the strictest of the three. It requires a fixed supplier cut-off date, proactive supplier monitoring, and a monitoring system that is independently audited. That audit is the difference between a real cruelty-free standard and a bunny logo a brand drew for itself.
On top of that: every product's packaging is CO₂-compensated through the non-profit Plan Vivo, Maria Nila offsets its total operational emissions, and 2% of net revenue goes to charity.
The whole range is sulfate- and paraben-free. The Coils & Curls and Purifying Cleanse lines are also silicone-free.
Who Maria Nila is for
You care about ethics and refuse to trade performance for them. This is the brand's core buyer. Plenty of vegan haircare underperforms. Maria Nila is a salon brand first.
You colour your hair and watch it fade. Very few brands cover all three colour jobs properly: protecting fresh colour (Luminous Colour), killing brass (Sheer Silver) and topping the tone back up at home (Colour Refresh). Maria Nila does.
Your scalp is dry, tight or itchy. Head & Hair Heal is the brand's most-reviewed collection worldwide and it is genuinely gentle — aloe vera, not medicated actives.
Your hair is fine and everything weighs it down. Pure Volume is a provitamin B5 system rather than a heavy polymer one.
You have curls or coils and follow a silicone-free routine. Coils & Curls is explicitly free from sulfates, parabens and silicones — a lot of "curl" lines are not.
Scent matters to you. Every collection has a named fragrance profile — jasmine and linden blossom, apple and blackberry, neroli and lemon. For many customers this is the actual reason they stay.
Who should probably look elsewhere
We would rather tell you now than have you return it.
If you are fragrance-sensitive. Almost everything in the range is scented, and the Booster Masques carry 50% more fragrance than the standard masks on purpose. Only Power Powder is unscented.
If you want grey coverage from Colour Refresh. It cannot do it. Colour Refresh pigments sit on the outer layer of the hair rather than penetrating it, so they will not cover grey and cannot lighten anything. You need a permanent colour.
If your main problem is bond damage from heavy bleaching. Structure Repair is a moisture-and- protein repair line — repairing algae extract, wheat protein, moringa oil. It is not a disulfide bond-rebuilding system. Use a dedicated bond treatment for that job and run Maria Nila alongside it for everyday care. They are complements, not substitutes.
If you want medicated scalp treatment. Head & Hair Heal soothes a dry, itchy scalp and Purifying Cleanse exfoliates build-up. Neither is an anti-dandruff drug and we will not describe them as one.
If you just want the cheapest sulfate-free shampoo. A drugstore product will do that job. Maria Nila earns its price on colour retention, styling performance and the certification audit trail — not on being sulfate-free alone.
The collections, one by one
Head & Hair Heal — for a dry, itchy scalp
Signature active: calming aloe vera extract. Balances hair and scalp for a healthier look and feel. Scented with jasmine and linden blossom.
This is Maria Nila's biggest seller globally, and for good reason: a lot of "scalp" products are harsh, and this one is not. What we carry runs shampoo (350 ml and 1 L), conditioner (100 ml, 300 ml and 1 L), a 250 ml masque and a 50 ml Booster Masque. If your scalp is sensitive and you stretch washes, the Soothing Dry Shampoo belongs in the same routine.
Best for: tight, itchy, flaky or generally unhappy scalps; anyone whose scalp reacts to strong shampoos.
True Soft — for naturally dry hair
Signature active: argan oil, with antioxidants and fatty acids that preserve moisture and add radiance. Softens, strengthens, and reduces frizz and static. Scented with lily, jasmine and rose.
The star of the collection is the True Soft Argan Oil, sold in 30 ml and 100 ml. It softens and strengthens, cuts frizz, and protects against heat up to 450 °F — which makes it a finishing oil and a heat protectant in one bottle.
Best for: hair that is dry by nature rather than by damage; rough texture, flyaways, winter static.
Pure Volume — for fine, flat hair
Signature active: provitamin B5, with wheat protein and moringa oil. Adds body and vitality to fine hair while preserving moisture. Citrusy floral scent of neroli, lemon and hyacinth.
The trap with volume products is that they build body by coating the hair, then the coating drags it back down by mid-afternoon. Pure Volume is built to add vitality without that weight. Pair it with the Pure Volume Mousse, or with Power Powder — a 4/5-hold silica silylate powder that is the only unscented product in the range.
Best for: fine or thin hair; anyone whose blow-dry collapses by lunchtime.
Structure Repair — for damage and split ends
Signature active: repairing algae extract. Built for damaged, dry and chemically treated hair — softness, lustre, less static. Soft scent of vanilla, rose and jasmine.
The one to know is the Structure Repair Leave In Cream, 200 ml. It adds wheat protein and moringa oil to the algae extract and seals split ends. Apply to washed, damp hair and leave it in.
Best for: over-processed lengths, split ends, hair that snaps when you brush it. Use alongside a bond treatment if you have been bleaching heavily.
Luminous Colour — for keeping your colour
Signature actives: pomegranate extract + Colour Guard Complex. This is the only care collection where Maria Nila names its colour-protection technology, and it is worth understanding what the claim actually is: Colour Guard Complex protects hair and scalp while reducing the colour loss caused by washing, heat styling, UV and free radicals. Fruity scent of apple, blackberry and peach.
Best for: anyone paying for salon colour who is tired of watching it go dull in three weeks. If colour retention is your number-one priority, this is the line — not Sheer Silver, which does a different job.
Sheer Silver — for blonde, grey and white hair
Signature actives: violet pigment + blackberry extract. Neutralises golden shades, leaves cooler tones, adds strength and shine. Fruity-floral scent of jasmine, orange and grapefruit.
Sheer Silver is deliberately gentle. It brightens and neutralises rather than depositing heavily, which makes it excellent for regular maintenance and for natural grey and white hair — but it will disappoint anyone expecting a dramatic single-wash tone change. For that, look at Silver Shot (a violet-pigmented treatment used after bleaching) or a Colour Refresh Pearl Silver.
Best for: maintaining cool blonde; keeping grey and white hair bright rather than yellowed.
Coils & Curls — for waves, curls and coils
Signature actives: shea butter, jojoba oil, aloe vera and vitamin E. Free from sulfates, parabens
and silicones.
Three products, and they work as a system: the Co-wash (a conditioning cleanser that cleans without stripping), the Rich Leave-In Cream / Oil In Cream for definition and detangling, and the
Finishing Treatment Masque for deep conditioning. Add Curlicue Cream (3/5 hold, defines curls and waves, prevents frizz and split ends) or the Luscious and Weightless curl gels for hold.
Best for: wavy through coily hair; anyone following a curly-girl routine who needs the silicone question answered honestly.
Purifying Cleanse — for the reset
Signature actives: AHA acids, aloe vera and peppermint. Silicone-, sulfate- and paraben-free.
The piece of this collection we carry is the Purifying Cleanse Exfoliating Serum, 150 ml. It sits on a dry or damp scalp for about ten minutes before you wash, loosening build-up and greasiness so the rest of your routine lands on a clean scalp rather than on last week's product. Dermatologically tested. Use it before a treatment, before a colour service, or whenever build-up has flattened your hair.
Best for: build-up, greasiness, a scalp that feels coated; a monthly reset in any routine.
Colour Refresh — for topping up your tone at home
Nourishing masks with semi-permanent pigments and argan oil. Apply to washed, towel-dried hair, leave 3–10 minutes depending on how intense you want it, rinse and condition. Lasts roughly 4–10 washes.
We carry fifteen shades, and they split into two families: cool and light (Pearl Silver, Cool Cream, Beige Blonde, Pearl Rose, Honey Blonde, Pink Peach) and rich or warm (Cacao, Cacao Intense, Bright Copper, Caramel Brown, Beige Brown, Autumn Red, Bright Red, Pink Pop, Vivid Violet). Every shade comes in 100 ml and 300 ml.

If you only buy one thing
A 50 ml Booster Masque in your collection.
It is the cheapest item in the care range and the smartest first purchase in the brand. Maria Nila built the Booster Masques to replace conditioner and hair mask in a single three-minute step, with
ten times more active ingredients and 50% more fragrance than its standard masks. They now ship without outer packaging.
There are six — Head & Hair Heal, Luminous Colour, Pure Volume, Sheer Silver, Structure Repair and True Soft — so there is one for almost every hair type. If you like it, buying the full line is an easy decision. If you don't, you have risked very little.
Smart buying tips
Buy the travel size before the litre. Most core shampoos and conditioners run 100 ml, 300–350 ml and 1 L, though not every line carries every size — the Head & Hair Heal shampoo and the Structure Repair and Sheer Silver conditioners start at 300–350 ml. The 100 ml is the same formula, so use it to test a line properly for a couple of weeks before you commit to a litre.
The litre is where the value is. Per millilitre it works out at roughly a third of the cost of the 100 ml travel size, and about half the cost of the 300–350 ml bottle. Once a line has proven itself on your hair, this is the size to buy.
Buy the shampoo and conditioner as a pair. Maria Nila's collections are formulated to work together, and the scent story only makes sense as a pair.
Use the published hold ratings. Maria Nila prints a hold rating out of 5 on most styling products — Cleansing Powder, Quick Dry Heat Spray and Cream Heat Spray at 1/5, Shaping Heat Spray and Salty Mist and Dry Shampoo and Texture Spray at 2/5, Curlicue Cream and Styling Cream and Ocean Spray at 3/5, Power Powder at 4/5. Very few brands publish this consistently. Use it instead of guessing from the label.
Mix Colour Refresh shades. Any two of them can be blended to make your own tone. Buy the 100 ml first while you work out your formula, then move to the 300 ml once you know it.
Frequently asked
Is it really cruelty-free? Yes — PETA, Vegan Society and Leaping Bunny, the last of which requires a fixed supplier cut-off date and an independently audited monitoring system.
Is Colour Guard Complex in everything? No. It is named on Luminous Colour and Colour Refresh. The rest of the range is sulfate-free and colour-safe, which already slows fade, but does not carry that specific claim.
Will Colour Refresh cover my greys? No. It is a semi-permanent pigment mask, not a dye.
Is this a bond repair brand? No. Structure Repair is moisture-and-protein repair. Use a dedicated bond treatment alongside it if you bleach heavily.
Is the packaging really carbon compensated? Yes — CO₂-compensated packaging on every product, with the company's total operational emissions offset through Plan Vivo. Note the wording: Maria Nila says "climate compensated", not "carbon neutral", and so do we.
